The ACT Government is continuing to implement a city-wide reform of transport, with a trial of smart parking to take place at Manuka in the first quarter of 2016.

One of the priorities for my government is a comprehensive reform of transport in Canberra – from light rail and buses to better roads and active travel. Smart parking is an example of our commitment to making Canberra an easier place to get around and reducing congestion in our town centres.

Smart Parking will use innovative technology to save drivers time, reduce traffic delays and provide a better overall user experience during the trial in Manuka. Drivers will be able to use a smart phone app, as well as intelligent, real-time traffic signs, to be guided to an available parking space. Real-time information on parking congestion will be captured through in-ground sensors and relayed to the app and signs.

Smart Parking will also offer advantages to Manuka’s retailers as improved turnover of parking spaces will give shoppers greater access in a more convenient and efficient manner.

Manuka has been selected as the site of the Smart Parking trial as it provides a mix of on- and off-street parking, as well as paid and time-limited parking.

The ACT Government will now move forward with our planning and consultation with the Manuka community during the design, build and operations phases of the 12-month trial. The procurement process is already under way and I will announce the successful vendor in due course.

The Smart Parking trial was first outlined in the ACT Government’s Digital Canberra Action Plan 2014-2018. The plan is our road map for how we lead, inspire and collaborate in the digital services age to provide the best possible services for the Canberra community.

The Government will announce further outcomes from the government’s work in transport reform in the coming weeks and months.
