Today I was pleased to announce an agreement with Football Federation Australia that will see the Socceroos play Kyrgyzstan in a World Cup qualification match at GIO Stadium Canberra on 12 November 2015.
After the success of the Asian Cup in January, when 82,000 people attended seven games at GIO Stadium Canberra, we have been very keen to bring more international football content to Canberra.
Bringing the Socceroos to Canberra will be a highlight for many sports fans and the football community in the Territory and the region. The match will be Australia’s fifth match in the opening round of World Cup qualification.
Major international sporting events such as this and the ACT Government’s agreement with Cricket Australia, showcases the Territory to a large interstate and international audience.
It also allows Canberrans to enjoy world-class entertainment right here in the ACT. Given this is a competitive, international football match during the warmer months, we are expecting a big crowd at GIO Stadium for the match.
These events are a sign of the city’s growth, and the Government will continue to explore other events that Canberra can host in the future.
