Last night's Canberra FM ‘Mad Hatters’ Party kicked off an exciting few months at Westside Acton Park, with new events and new vendors just in time for the warmer Canberra weather. A new gelato stall, a fish and chip shop and two Indian street food vendors will begin operating from the site shortly. The Westside project was designed to breath life to an otherwise quiet area of the Lake. Since March, Westside has attracted tens of thousands of Canberrans to its markets and events. Stromlo Stomping Grounds was appointed see the project through the delivery and initial opening of the site. The community now has a space unlike any other in the city that, even during the winter months, is attracting large numbers.
As the weather warms up it will really come into its own, with events including the International Twilight Fair, Cocktails for a cause and the AIDS Action Council of the ACT Fair Day.
With the construction now complete, management of the Park will return to the ACT Government. ACT Property Group will be appointed to manage the day to day operation of Westside, including managing tenants, events and promotions. I wish to thank Stromlo Stomping Grounds for their role in developing Westside. It was a highly complex project, but the end result will give the area a new identity. Stromlo Stomping Grounds Director, Terry Shaw said they were proud of what has been achieved at Westside. “SSG is extremely proud of what we have achieved with Westside and it has been great to watch our idea come to reality,” Mr Shaw said. This will be a seamless transition, and I’m really excited about the upcoming events to be held at Westside. Vendors should be encouraged by the next stage in the life of Westside as we move into the summer months. We have a number of great ideas to improve the area – with more live music, more event promotion and more vendors set to boost the area.
