Minister Barr: Government replaces stolen Citizen of the Year Award
- Written by ACT Government
Released 10/07/2015
The ACT Government has presented the 2006 Canberra Citizen of the Year with a replacement medal, certificate and pin after the originals were stolen.
Matilda House was named as the Canberra Citizen of the Year in 2006, recognising her for an outstanding and sustained commitment to Indigenous issues both locally and nationally.
Today was another opportunity to recognise Ms House’s continuing contribution to our community.
Ms House had represented the interests of Canberra’s Indigenous people on a host of formal committees, councils and advisory groups, helping to guide policy-making on issues as diverse as heritage, justice and the environment. These include the first ACT Heritage Council, the United Ngunnawal Elders Council, the now defunct Queanbeyan Regional Council of ATSIC, the Ngambril Local Aboriginal Land Council, the Commonwealth’s Tent Embassy Advisory Committee and the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Consultative Council.
