Released 05/06/2015

Today  the ACT Government released a Request for Proposal (RFP) to industry for the  smart parking trial which will commence early 2016.

The  smart parking trial will use the best technologies to make it easier for  drivers to find free and paid parking both on-and off-street. Canberrans will  soon benefit from the significantly reduced traffic congestion and efficiencies  for business, governments and transport networks reported by other cities  around the world after adopting smart parking.

The  ACT Government will use a 12 month trial commencing in the first quarter of  2016 to assess the new smart parking service and how much easier it makes  things for drivers by decreasing travel times, reducing ‘circling’ for  parking and increasing car park vehicle  turnover. This Request for Proposal will access market expertise to deliver an  integrated service to drivers and ensure that the trial delivers value for  money.

Investing  in smart parking  is about enhancing our city centres and making it easier for Canberrans and  visitors to drive and park in the Territory.  We want a solution that is tailored to Canberra and works for the ACT  community.

Throughout  the trial the ACT Government will work with the community and local businesses  to test and seek feedback on smart parking technology and its effectiveness.

In  May 2015, the ACT Government consulted with industry through a draft Statement  of Requirements to inform the Request for Proposal. Feedback received from  industry  was very supportive of the trial in the ACT and helped to shape the final  procurement documents.

Smart parking is a system that is  able to capture real time information on parking occupancy by using technology  such as in-ground sensors. Using smart phone apps and intelligent traffic  signs, smart parking systems guide road users to available parking spots at  their destination.

Further information on the Request  for Proposal and Statement of Requirements will be available from 5 June 2015  at www.procurement.act.gov.au/tenders/open_tenders.  The application period closes 3 July 2015.
