Through the 2022-23 Budget, the ACT Government is continuing to deliver a strong pipeline of suburban infrastructure projects that will create and protect good local jobs.

Now is the time to invest in our city, in infrastructure that is built for Canberra, to ensure that the Canberra of 2030 continues to be one of the most liveable cities in the world.

We know that many Canberra families enjoy our local playgrounds, and the Government will deliver on our commitment to build a new destination style playground and recreation park for the Inner North at Watson.

This Budget will also invest in improvements to the Charnwood Group Centre, with upgraded pavements, landscaping and new furniture creating a safer and more accessible environment for visitors and businesses in the precinct.

The government will fund the replacement of three timber bridges in the Umbagong District Park following their closure in early 2021 for safety. Following community feedback, a new lookout will be built on one of the bridges.

We will also commence early planning and design work for a future library in the Molonglo region, with funding to begin a co-design process for the facility with the community. This will be located in the new Molonglo Commercial Centre.

A new green waste processing facility and landscape depot will be built off Stockdill Drive in West Belconnen to replace the existing facility on Parkwood Road in Holt. This facility will reduce the amount of material sent to landfill and promote more beneficial reuse of through composting of both commercial and residential green waste.

This investment announced today is another part of the ACT Government’s plan to create and protect local jobs by delivering infrastructure that is built for Canberra and built to support the city Canberrans want in the future.

The Government is also delivering on many of the commitments we took to the 2020 ACT election, including the construction of a new recreation park and playground in the Inner North.

Through the upcoming ACT Budget, the Government will continue to make significant investments to build Canberra’s future. The Budget will include even more investment into schools, hospitals, and the services and local infrastructure that Canberrans know and love.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel

We are working to deliver the biggest upgrade to suburban facilities in Canberra’s history, including new infrastructure and upgrades to existing facilities to ensure that that they can continue to meet the needs of our growing community.

This program is well underway with new public space upgrades at the local shops in Kaleen due for completion in the next month.  Construction work is also starting at the Duffy and Campbell local shops with the next stages of consultation on upgrades to Brierly Street at Cooleman Court and Kippax Group Centre kicking off soon.

These works will continue to support local jobs and businesses across Canberra and also keep delivering our commitments to Canberrans. By involving the community in our planning we are ensuring the infrastructure we deliver meets the changing needs of local communities.
