Civic Square will be transformed into an open-air ice rink from today until Sunday 17 July throughout the school holidays, which should provide a boost to businesses in Canberra’s CBD.

Participating businesses and partners in the city centre, including the Canberra Centre, Canberra Theatre Centre, Canberra Museum & Gallery, Craft ACT and Libraries ACT are offering unique winter experiences; exhibitions, pop-up bars and cosy spaces for all ages. Key attractions include:

  • Ice skating rink with skate hire, café and ice sculptures
  • Food vendors and fireplaces, gourmet hot chocolate and even flames to toast your own marshmallows
  • Winter dRINKs Bar at Canberra Theatre Centre Terrace
  • ‘Back to the Boombox’ 80s party, a maker space, and a cosy reading nook for kids at CMAG
  • Mulled wine, s’mores and indoor snowfall at the Canberra Centre’s Winter Village

Ice rink ticket bookings and Winter in the City’s other retail, food and beverage offers can be found via winter.inthecity.com.au

The City Renewal Authority is coordinating the delivery of its biggest winter program yet, to encourage Canberrans to spend more time in the city centre – shopping, eating, being entertained and socialising with a target to attract over 20,000 visitors to the city across the event period.

Local businesses are encouraged to participate in the Winter in the City campaign by getting involved with offers and promotions aimed to appeal to the Canberra community and can still sign up at winter.inthecity.com.au

Quotes attributable to Malcolm Snow, CEO, City Renewal Authority

“This year’s Winter in the City is the perfect time to plan a day or night out in the city centre. We look forward to welcoming Canberrans and visitors to enjoy the ice rink, dRINKs bar, exhibitions, music and events.

“In 2021, Winter in the City attracted 20,000 people into the city centre’s restaurants, bars and events, and this year will be even bigger. We’re proud to have worked with our partners to offer new experiences that promote visitation to the city and boost its economy.”

Quotes attributable to Gordon Ramsay, CEO of the Cultural Facilities Corporation:

“The CFC is delighted to be a part of Winter in the City. We’ll be bringing the party atmosphere with our ‘Winter dRINKs Bar’ on the terrace of Canberra Theatre where you can sip mulled wine while you watch the skating action below. Or book a ticket to CMAG’s ‘Back to the Boombox’ 80s party on 8 July where you can keep warm dancing the night away with Project Beats and enjoy 80s-inspired activities, with food vendors and retro drinks. There are also plenty of great shows and exhibitions to see at the theatre and the gallery throughout Winter in the City.”
