Joint media release: Andrew Bar MLA and Meegan Fitzharris MLA

With work well underway on the first stage of Canberra's city-wide light rail network, Canberrans will now get to have their say on the route for stage two of the project - linking Civic to the Woden town centre.

In October last year, Canberrans voted overwhelmingly for an integrated public transport system which included a light rail network with a north-south spine extending from the Gungahlin town centre, through Civic and onto the Woden town centre.

Woden is a key growth area in Canberra with an employment population of more than 120,000. By 2041 almost 90,000 people are expected to be living within one kilometre of the Woden corridor. Light rail will support this growth, helping to revitalise parts of Woden and its surrounding southern suburbs.

Light Rail to Woden involves crossing the lake and through the Parliamentary Triangle. From today, the ACT Government will undertake community consultation on the route and the alignment of the corridor.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said this consultation campaign, following the community’s feedback on Woden as the preferred second stage of light rail, was the first of many opportunities the community would have to help inform the project to Woden.

“Today is the first chance the community has to provide their thoughts and input on how we should take this project from Civic to Woden,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The suggested routes being presented today will be workshopped by community members and a range of stakeholders to ensure we get the best outcome for Canberrans who will use this service every day.

“This engagement will inform our technical and expert planning to determine the Stage 2 route.

“Two primary route options are currently being considered, both with potential end points at the Woden Town Centre or Canberra Hospital.

These options are:

  • City – Commonwealth Avenue – Capital Circle – Adelaide Avenue – Woden Town Centre – Canberra Hospital (optional)
  • City – Commonwealth Avenue  – Barton – Adelaide Avenue – Woden Town Centre – Canberra Hospital (optional)

“The proposed options consider things like liveability, travel times, passenger convenience and transport integration,” Minister Fitzharris said.

Route options, alignment and stop locations for Stage 2 can be discussed by visiting www.yoursay.act.gov.au.

Light rail stage 2 is part of the ACT Labor-Greens Parliamentary Agreement.
