While dining out is great, sometimes dining in can be even better. At some of Melbourne’s top restaurants, diners can turn a casual dinner into a truly spectacular occasion by opting for a private dining space, away from the hub-bub of a busy restaurant floor. Here are 10 of the best:
AtticaAustralia’s best restaurant has a private dining room that many would give their eye teeth for to dine at. Attica’s private dining room seats up to 12 people and can be reserved for dinner Tuesday – Saturday. Bar LourhinaAt Bar Lourhina, the private dining room is known as ‘The Chapel’, and is able to cater for sit down dinner parties, cocktail events and event paella nights. CumulusCumulus’ private events are held next door to the restaurant, at Arc One Gallery, surrounded by the gallery’s latest works. Eau De VieEau de Vie offers three rooms – the main bar and two private rooms – that can cater for up to 150 people. The Whisky Room is a secret chamber that showcases Eau De Vie’s private Whisky lockers (including stashes of the finest drams known to man) while the Library features a custom-built degustation/tasting table complete with an ice well cut into the table to keep the bar’s signature cocktails nice and cold. 1 Malthouse Lane, Melbourne. The EuropeanOverlooking Spring Street, The European has several private dining options – all with very different ambiances and menus; the Tea Room is ideal for breakfast, lunch or dinner, while the Melbourne Supper Club and Siglo are perfect for breakfasts, lunches and weddings. Flower DrumFor almost 40 years, Flower Drum has been serving up some of the city’s most decadent Chinese delicacies. Grossi FlorentinoGrossi Florentino has two opulent private dining spaces – one that accommodates up to 35 people, and another cosy room, that accommodates eight. Press Club ProjectsNext door to Press Club and Gazi is press Club Projects, a test kitchen and private dining room for eight. SupernormalThrough the restaurant and past the open kitchen, a spectacular circular staircase leads to Supernormal’s intimate private dining room. Here, the restaurant caters for private lunch and dinner parties of up to 40 guests and up to 60 guests for cocktail events. Vue De MondeVue de Monde’s private dining room is, not surprisingly, the ultimate in culinary luxury. Named the Dom Perignon Room, the room seats up to 14 people and has an evolving set menu matched to macth the eponymous wine. In keeping with Vue’s ethos of combining luxury and sustainability, Joost Bakker of By Joost was commissioned to create an installation of natural materials. As such, the candles, made in the shape of Dom Perignon bottles, are 100 per cent beeswax, and each Tiller chair, designed by Ross Didier, is covered in kangaroo skin.
