Congratulations to those Canberrans who have received honours in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours list. All those who have been honoured have made a significant contribution to our community and the country across a range of disciplines.

Firstly, Professor Brian Anderson, Distinguished Professor at the ANU Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering, has been appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for his eminent service to information and communications technology, engineering and higher education, to professional scientific associations, and as a mentor of young scientists. Dr Ian Watt was also appointed an AC for eminent service to the community through public sector leadership and administration.

Five Canberrans were appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) including Dr Thomas Joseph Higgins for his distinguished service to agricultural biotechnology, Professor John White for distinguished service to science globally in the field of chemistry, and the late Professor Michael Raupach who was acknowledged for his distinguished service to science in Australia and internationally as a leader and researcher into climate change and land systems.

Several recipients were also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), including Mr William Daniels for significant service to education as an advocate for the independent schools sector and Professor Denis Evans for significant service to science, particularly chemistry as an academic and researcher.

A number of Canberrans were also recognised for their strong involvement in our community, being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). Mr Duncan Smith was acknowledged for his service to Indigenous youth and the community, Ms Genevieve Bolton for service to the law, particularly to welfare rights, and Mrs Sybil Gately for service to choral music.

I would like to congratulate Ms Sandra Georges, Parliamentary Counsel, Justice and Community Safety Directorate within the ACT Government who was awarded a Public Service Medal. Ms Georges has made an outstanding contribution to the law and the community throughout her career in the ACT Parliamentary Counsel’s Office.

I would also like to congratulate Mr David Ingram and Mr John Streatfield who were both awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM), Mr Paul Cortese who received an Emergency Services Medal (ESM) and a number of Canberrans who were awarded Military Honours.

I congratulate everyone who was honoured as part of the Queen’s Birthday honours list. Their contribution to our community is something to be celebrated.
