Canberra is set to host world class hockey over the coming years, with the ACT Government partnering with Hockey Australia and Hockey ACT to host the World Masters Cup in 2016 and Trans-Tasman fixtures in 2017 and 2019.
Bringing high level sporting events to Canberra helps build the territory’s profile across the country. This announcement follows on from the partnership the ACT Government has developed with Cricket Australia to bring some of Australia’s best sporting stars to the capital.
Hosting international sporting fixtures aims to not only increase participation in sport in the ACT at the grass root level, but provide economic and social benefit to our community.
The World Masters Cup will attract elite male and female hockey players aged over 35 from around the world, will be held at the National Hockey Centre in Lyneham.
More than 50 teams from 20 different countries are expected to participate in the 12-day tournament between 29 March and 9 April 2016.
In addition, Canberra will host international matches in 2017 and 2019 as part of a new style Trans-Tasman series, where the Australian Kookaburras and Hockeyroos will face the New Zealand Black Sticks Men and Women teams.
