As Australia’s cultural capital, Melbourne has a multitude of arts experiences for culture vultures – but it’s the surrounding regions that are giving the city a run for its money. With a genuine love of the arts, regional Victoria boasts an impressive selection of art galleries which in the coming months are presenting impressive programs of major international blockbusters that would be heralded as artistic coups anywhere in the world:

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale (19 August – 17 September 2017) returns for a month-long celebration of international and Australian photography. This year, iconic American photographer David LaChapelle – considered one of the most important photographers of our time – headlines with a major exhibition that will be nationally exclusive to the Festival.

Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell will host Australian first exhibition Rene Magritte: The Revealing Image (19 August – 19 November 2017). In a great coup for the gallery, the exhibition features 132 original photographs and eight films by the Belgium-born artist – with many works that have never been seen outside Europe.

A slice of Hollywood history will arrive in Bendigo with The Costume Designer: Edith Head and Hollywood (29 September, 2017 – 21 January 2018). This exhibition honours the life and work of multiple Academy Award-winning costume designer Edith Head, who is considered the most significant costume designer in the history of cinema. The exhibition brings together more than 70 of Head’s most recognised costumes, from the 1930s to the 1960s, gleaned from the archives of Paramount, the Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design and other private collections.
