Procuring a new piece of artwork becomes an richer experience when combined with the opportunity to meet the artist, watch them work and hear the story behind their work of art. Artist trails and open studio events throughout regional Victoria enable art-aficionados to do just that, and gain an insight into the world beyond the finished product. 

Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open StudiosIn an area renowned for attracting artists from around the state and around the country, creative work spaces are everywhere. Visitors can see these resident visionaries at work during the annual Open Studios event (31 October–1 November, 7–8  November, 14–15 November 2015) which celebrates the region’s artistic community.

Macedon Ranges Art TrailThe Macedon Ranges Art Trail includes more than 40 artists’ studio, and galleries – all of which are presented in a colour-coded map, so visitors can base their journey on  a particular town or a style of art that suits them. Artists welcome visitors for an up close and personal view of their work – however, private studios require a prior appointment.

Lost Trades FairThe Lost Trades Fair (12- 13 March 2016) in Kyneton provides an opportunity to meet real, modern-day makers – to see, hear, touch and experience craftsmanship, skill and artistry, and talk with the makers themselves. From chair makers to coopers to makers of penny farthings and boatbuilders, 100 crafty folks will be practising their trades at the biggest gathering of traditional makers in the country.

Peninsula Studio TrailThe Peninsula Studio Trail is a self-guided journey through the studios and workshops of a diverse group of Mornington Peninsula artists. A trail map allows art lovers to select the artists and regions they wish to visit, while setting their own individual pace. Not only can patrons view the works of the artist, they can also view the artist at work. From painting to photography, sculpture to textile, there is a genre to suit any art collector.

Sorrento Portsea Artists TrailFor many years the Mornington Peninsula has inspired the work of a number of famous artists, and the Sorrento Portsea Artists Trail aims to bring these artists’ work to life by positioning images of the paintings as close as possible to the scene viewed by the artist. The work of famous Australian artists such as Albert Tucker, Sir Arthur Streeton and Arthur Boyd can be viewed against a backdrop of the land and seascapes that inspired them.

Yindyamarra Sculpture WalkAlong the beautiful Wagirra Trail that follows the path of the Murray River, visitors will find the new Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk. The five kilometre Walk features 11 sculptures, created by local Aboriginal artists, scattered along the Wagirra Trail between Kremur Street and Wonga Wetlands. The sculptures are accompanied by interpretative panels and videos (accessible via smartphone) which tell the story of Aboriginal history and the cultural significance of the Murray River.

Briagolong Open StudiosAs part of Briagolong Open Studios (21–22 November), 15 artists from Briagolong and surrounding Gippsland towns will open their studios to allow visitors to explore their talent and see the designs of the local artists. With free demonstrations, visitors can be inspired by the art of glassblowing or learn how textiles are used to create magnificent pieces.

Phillip IslandExceptional Phillip Island offers an Arts and Artisan tour that introduces participants to passionate local artists who share their knowledge as they work. Guests on the tour can learn photography tips from professionals, visit goldsmiths to understand how Australian-made jewellery is created and stop by the creative studio spaces of an acclaimed potter and glass maker.
